The marital game, divorce, and divorce frequency among the Temne of Sierra Leone

The data bases used are ethnogrphy, censuses taken in what was formerly the chiefdom of Kolifa Mayoso in1955, 1963 and 1976, and in the administrative/ service center town of Magburaka in 1963 and 1976, in Magbuaka in 1976, and to secondary school students in Magburaka in 1963 and 1976. Concern is thus with rural changes, urban changes, and rural-ruban differences. Special emphasis is placed on srategies employed in the marital game, the grounds for divorce, opinions regarding the repayment of bridewealth and the retention of children, and divorce ratios. Finally, I deal with explanations of increasing divorce rates.
