Still, emergency contraceptives are very much under-utilised & awareness of emergency contraceptives among people is limited. This post-coital form of interception is another way & means of regulating fertility in females & should be given due importance in the existing family planning services in India. However, a careful assessment of different methods is crucial in deciding the individual's need & suitability of the method to be offered. The present paper describes various methods of emergency contraception, indication of their use, mechanism of action, their efficacy & side-effects.
