| Summary, etc. | India has a male dominated society where women are treated lower in position compared to men in all social, economic, cultural & political matters. The present study was initiated to determine the position of women in their families & their behaviour towards family planning in two districts (Nellore & Ananthpur) of Andhra Pradesh through multi-stage random sampling. The influences of variables such as education, occupation, income of women, succession to property, & son-preference, etc are also studied. An index was developed on various aspects on the status of women. The findings revealed that the adoption of family planning methods was higher (68%) among women who had education upto college & above. It was seen that 68% of women with white-collar jobs adopted permanent methods of family planning (.01 levels of significance when tested by chi-square analysis). A mojority of women (63.37%) with an annual income of Rs.30.001/- & above practiced family planning. The study reveals a positive relationship between son preference & family planning practices by women in Andhra Pradesh. |
